Freaky Friday: Spooky Facebook Tales

It’s Friday the 13th and we are feeling mighty superstitious.  Avoiding black cats, dangerous situations (like heavy machinery) and cracks in the pavement are certainly on our to-do list.

Are you feeling fearful this Friday, too?  If you had to name your own spooky tale, what would it be?  We took to our Facebook Fans to find out their titles.  Here are some of our favorites:

“Friday the 13th: The Day I Failed Business Statistics” – Dave B.,

“Friday the 13th: The Day of Evil Wombat Attacks” – Shannon C., West Liberty University

“Friday the 13th: The Day Grades Came Out” – Lilly M., Capital Law

“Friday the 13th: The Day Before Saturday” – Kevin M., Brevard Community College

Writing On the Wall Bans Teen From Prom

He asked her to prom.  She said, “Yes.”  The school said, “No.”  One creative gesture leaves one high school senior dateless for prom and another banned from the social event of the year.

UPDATE: Team Tate was on to something. The high school senior will now be able to attend his school prom.

Shelton, Conn. high school senior James Tate wanted to ask his friend, Sonali Rodrigues, to prom in a unique way.  So, late one night, he and a friend taped large cardboard letters to the entrance of their high school spelling out “Sonali Rodrigues, Will you go to prom with me? HMU Tate,” The Connecticut Post reports.

The sweet gesture landed Tate a date, but school officials weren’t wooed by the act.  They say he was trespassing and risked his life by using a ladder to post the letters, the paper reported.

So Tate’s punishment?  He is now banned from attending prom.

Too harsh?  Many seem to think so.

The Let James Tate Go To Prom Facebook Fan Page has more than 123,000 “likes” and the Wall is filled with support for romantic teen.

One fan, Sue, writes, “There was no damage to property, there was no crime in what he did.  He should be allowed to go to senior prom…I hope the rest of the town stands up for them!!”

The world is all-a-twitter about this punishment, too.  The hashtag #teamtate has been quickly catching on with growing tweets of support.

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti has also weighed in on the matter stating he doesn’t think the “punishment fits the crime.”

With all of the buzz surrounding this ban, new legislation is even in the works!  State Reps. Jason Perillo and Sean Williams are introducing an amendment that would “force schools to come up with an alternate means of punishment rather than banning students from school events,” according to the paper. So what do you think: Are you Team Tate?  Should he be allowed to go to prom?

Robots Deliver Books At University of Chicago

The new Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago has gone digital (and futuristic).  This library has no shelves or books in plain view.  Instead, all books are kept in an underground storage space, which spans the length of the library.   The 3.5 million volumes of books are kept in stacks and are managed and delivered by robotic cranes, according to Wired.com.   Take a look at how the library, opening next week, will work.

Colleges of the Stars

Spring has us thinking about graduation and the endless possibilities the future has in store for college graduates.  Some college grads go on to pursue a great job in their fields of choice.  For others, working toward a degree was one step on their path to being “discovered.”  Many celebrities have degrees from wonderful schools under their belts.  Hey, it’s important to always have a plan B right?  Check out celebrities who have gained notoriety in the entertainment industry, but at one time were students just like you.

Texas A&M University in Kingsville counts Eva Longoria amongst their alumni. The actress received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 1998.

Also holding a Bachelor of Science degree is Lisa Kudrow, who graduated from Vassar College.

Tommy Lee Jones earned an English degree from Harvard University in 1969. “Black Swan”’s Natalie Portman also studied at Harvard and gained her B.A. in Psychology in 2003.

New York City was home to the college of several stars, including Denzel Washington who graduated from Fordham University in 1977 with a Journalism degree. Both Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal studied Eastern Religions at Columbia University, but only Maggie completed the degree.  Julia Stiles is also an alumnus of Columbia – her degree is in English.

A slew of late-night funny guys have degrees, as well:

  • Conan O’Brien is a Harvard grad with a degree in American History
  • Studying Speech Therapy at Emerson College has helped Jay Leno achieve success
  • Jon Stewart attended the College of William & Mary, earning a degree in Psychology in 1984
  • David Letterman’s degree is in Broadcasting from Ball State University

Nikki Sixx Draws Record-Breaking Crowd In Boston

On Friday May 6, rock invaded the Boston University Bookstore.

Nikki Sixx drew a huge crowd to the BU store while promoting his new book “This Is Gonna Hurt.”

Nikki Sixx held a huge book signing at the Boston University bookstore.

One fan, MaryEllen C., said, “You guys handled us crazy Sixx fans well! Especially those of us who showed up as soon as you opened. Would love to know how many fans showed up? Nikki tweeted that the Boston signing had broken a record for attendance.”

Although we don’t have a final count, the event definitely drew the largest in-store event crowd yet!

But, perhaps the most touching moment of the event was when a dedicated fan, who is now homeless, waited in line to get his picture with the rocker.  Not only did he get his photo taken, but he got a signed copy of the book, too.

We heart Nikki Sixx!

Graduation Gift Guide

For those who are graduating it is a time to reflect on what has been and what is yet to come.  For those not graduating– it’s a time to buy gifts.

Yes.  Graduation parties and celebrations usually call for a token, which honors this large achievement.  But what should you give the grad?  Here are some great gift ideas for graduates.  These items can be found at select campus bookstores.

Diploma frames by Framing Success are excellent graduation gifts.

  1. If you have money to spend, pick up a diploma frame.  The graduate’s campus bookstore sells frames, which are customized by school– a very nice touch.  Frames will run you anywhere from $100 to $200 though, so this may be a better gift for those without a tight budget.
  2. A great way to remember the past four-years is through photographs.  So, another wonderful gift for grads are framed, school pictures.  Again, this can cost about $130, so make sure you have budget for this gift.
  3. But, if you would still like to celebrate in photos, here is another option– a school photo album.  For just $20, your scholar can organize his or her memories in a safe place.
A nice pen goes a long way in the working world.

4.   As my dad says, “Everyone could use a nice pen when they start working.”  And it’s true.  Pick up a school customized ballpoint pen as a gift for just $17.

5.   Want to send your grad to special events in style?  Why not buy a pair of cufflinks?  Custom cufflinks are about $40.

6.  Many students survived school with the help of coffee.  Let your grad show their pride with each sip they take with a school alumni mug ($11).

7.  As a grad it’s essential to show school spirit on-the-go.  So, an alumni license plate frame is a must for $20.

Have other great gift ideas?  Share them with us in the comments below.

Freaky Friday: Pacific University

This week we travel to Forest Grove, Oregon– home to Pacific University.  Founded in 1849, Pacific is no stranger to unearthly happenings.  Jessica Hamlet, a Pacific University graduate, shares stories of one ghost who is determined to scare you to bits.

Pacific’s resident ghost is Vera, a young woman who haunts Knight Hall, which is now home to the University’s admissions department.  In the first part of the 20th century, Knight Hall housed the music department.  It is rumoured that Vera was upstairs one night, practicing the piano, when her boyfriend stopped by to visit her.  In her haste to greet him, she reportedly fell down the stairs and broke her neck.  She has haunted the building ever since.

Tales of Vera haunt Pacific University’s Knight Hall.

Vera spends her time like any other ghost—closing doors and windows, moving furniture, making noises, and even writing on the chalkboards in the basement.  She also occasionally appears in the upper windows in the evenings, and sometimes even ventures out of the house and across the street to one of the residential buildings, Walter Hall.

That’s where my college friend first spotted Vera.

My freshman year, one of my friends was living in the north wing of Walter, closest to Knight Hall.  She said that she woke up one night to find her window open and Vera sitting at the desk, watching her sleep.

Creepy!

Being a music student, Vera has strong opinions about any sounds being played in the building.  She’s been known to turn off the radio if she doesn’t like the music.  When the building was still home to the music department, Vera would sometimes play the piano and sing.  There is a report of a student who was in the building one night and began to play the piano.  The room suddenly became very cold, and a young woman entered the room.  She approached the piano, said “please stop,” and left the room.  The student followed her into the hall, but she had disappeared.  The student reportedly returned the next night with more people and began to play the piano again.  Although Vera did not reappear, the students reported hearing a very loud, very dramatic sigh when the piano player hit a wrong note.

Jeff Grundon is an admissions advisor who currently works in Knight Hall.  He too shared these stories of Vera:

“I’ve had over 50 encounters with Vera. She has locked doors on me, picked up my briefcase and moved it while I was looking at it, and turned on a fan that was off. She has made smells in one spot in my office, walked up and down the stairs, closed doors, laughed at me, and whispered to me and my brother. She’s turned on the lights in the building, then I’d turn them off and come back later and she had turned them all on again.”

- Jessica Hamlet, Guest Blogger, Pacific University ’08

Freaked out yet?  If not, here are some more ghostly tales.  And if you have your own to share, feel free to submit them in the comments below.
