The Anthropology Club at Ball State University has hosted several tours of the university’s myths and legends over the years– and according to paranormal investigator Jeff Davis, they have plenty of material to cover. In 2005, Davis hosted a Ghost Hunters presentation, during which he claimed that “Ball State had more paranormal activity than any college campus” he had previously been to. However, not all of the stories from Ball State are as spooky as you would think.
Affectionately referred to as Benny by students, the Beneficence statue is believed to have insight into the love life of those who kiss beneath her watchful eyes. Benny will flap her wings in approval if you are with your true love. Should Benny not approve of the union, she will refrain from moving. The couples’ eyes must both be shut, so unless an onlooker happens to walk by at the right moment, there is no way to know for sure that they have Benny’s blessing.
When exams are approaching and most students are nervously cramming in the library, your woes can be cured with a trip to visit Frog Baby. Legend goes that rubbing the statue’s nose will bring the student luck on an exam. This belief has been passed on throughout the years, causing the university to build a fountain home for Frog Baby in 1993 in an attempt to deter students from rubbing the statue and damaging it after it had been restored. Despite her new home, students still make every effort of following through on the myth and have taken to dressing her up in warm clothing so she does not get cold through the winter months.
Have you had an experience with Benny or Frog Baby that led you to believe in these legends? Are there other myths that are more widely believe at Ball State University? Share your stories with us in the comments below!
