Call Me Maybe: Harvard Edition

Carly Rae Jepsen’s catchy song Call Me Maybe first caught our attention when teen sensations Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and friends posted a lip sync video of the song on YouTube. Now we can barely listen to the radio for more than an hour without hearing the song…not that we’re complaining. Since the success of Gomez & Bieber’s video, many popstar-hopefuls have taken to posting their own versions of the song to YouTube. Our favorite so far comes to us courtesy of the Harvard baseball team. Watch what happens when a van full of baseball players gets bored on a roadtrip & tell us who you’d like to see cover the song next in the comments below.

Spring Fever

I’ll admit it, I’ve been overcome with spring fever! As Mother Nature ushers in the spring, I can’t help but look forward to all the exciting things that come with the change of seasons. I could sit and describe why all day but, for time-management purposes, I’ve narrowed it down to three distinct reasons. Readers be warned, exposure to this blog post might result in your own outbreak of the fever!

Bright colors show up everywhere in the spring time!

1. More Sunlight: Yesterday we tweeted about sunlight’s effect on stress, but it also offers a variety of other benefits! Aside from boosting our immune systems, moderate sun exposure (with sunscreen, of course!) can increase one’s overall mood and sense of well-being. That is definitely something to be happy about.

2. Bright Colors: From wardrobes to gardens, bright colors are notorious for popping up come spring time. I can NOT wait for flowers to start blooming. Try investing in a house plant or two – they are known for increasing air quality and reducing stress levels! (Find out more on the House of Plants website!)

3. Baseball: Even if you’re not a baseball fan, you can’t deny the excitement that accompanies opening day. Food, sports, fans…what more is there to want?

What are you looking forward to this spring? Post a comment below!

Selfless Teacher Pays Student’s Tuition

One math teacher and a promise adds up to a moving story of friendship and commitment.

Tony Apuzzi, a math teacher in the Bronx sold his prize possessions, including signed Yankees baseballs, in order to put a past student through college, according to The Jackson Sun.

Jaselle Ruiz was Apuzzi’s math student when she was about 12 years-old. Raised by her grandparents, Ruiz promised them she would become a doctor one day. Apuzzi saw she had great potential and believed in her dream, so he made her a promise—receive good grades and stay out of trouble and Apuzzi would pay for her college tuition.

Ruiz achieved her dream and is pre-med at Lehman College. And Apuzzi kept his promise. To pay for Ruiz’s schooling, Apuzzi sold his valuables including signed Yankee baseballs to Steiner Sports Memorabilia. But, it wasn’t enough. However, the owner of Steiner Sports having heard of the heart-felt story, contacted Yankee closer Mariano Rivera and both presented Apuzzi with $6,000 from the Rivera Foundation, according to The Jackson Sun. Apuzzi now had what he needed to put Ruiz through school.

As I read this article, I was moved. A teacher saw something in a child (she was only in sixth-grade after all) and made a promise to her, which he always remembered and followed through with years later. Apuzzi didn’t just make a promise. He made a commitment to this young girl.

It is nice to see there are still genuine and good-hearted people in the world– People who are trying to make the world a better place, one person at a time.
