The IT List: Full Steam(punk) Ahead!

One trend we are loving for fall is steampunk. Now, there’s a good chance you’re thinking, “What is steampunk?”. We like to think of it as what the past would look like if the future had happened sooner. It’s a style that emerged from a sub-genre of science fiction that mixes the Victorian Era with the Industrial Revolution (cool, right?). It might seem intimidating at first – the intricate designs and costume-like silhouettes – but you don’t have to go full-blown Helena Bonham Carter to rock this quirky trend. Find out how we pull style inspiration from all things steampunk

One way to make a trend like this more wearable is by working it into your accessories. I like to think of this method as “catwalk” to “sidewalk”, a way to make couture more everyday. I’ve pulled together an “inspiration board” to help you kickstart your journey into the world of steampunk.

Being the college-loving bunch that we are, we also can’t resist the steampunk-inspired school supplies from Pierre Belvédère. In particular, we’re big fans of the Agendas pictured below.  The best part? They’re available at your campus bookstore!

The IT List: April Showers Bring May FLOWERS!

Well, I know it doesn’t feel like it yet for some of us, but Spring is finally here! It’s that time again to blow the dust off your favorite open-toe wedges and start chucking those haven’t-fit-since-the-seventh-grade-but-maybe-next-year jeans to make room for the hottest trends of 2014.

This year,  floral is all the rage and personally, I couldn’t be any more excited. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Floral?? I think my grandma lives in that part of the department store.” But have no fear! Whether your style is edgy or chic, girly or casual – I’ve got you covered!

1. For a casual look that still makes a statement, try out a high-waisted floral print legging or jean with a muted crop top or boyfriend tank. Add a pair of converse and – voila! This outfit is sure to get you some positive attention – without experiencing that uncontrollable urge to check how you look in any and all reflective surfaces throughout the day.

2. When blended with leather, any outfit can be edgy (even Grandma’s). This electric floral crop top is perfectly balanced by a high-waisted leather mini. Try something similar for a noticeable look on a fun night out with the girls. Keep it from being too over-the-top by candy-colored flats with a pastel clutch.

3. It’s festival season and our last look is perfect. Take flowery denim shorts, but tone down the “foofiness” by adding a relaxed graphic tee. Lace-up boots are perfect for dancing around in the mud all day, while spiky jewelry adds an edgy touch.

Shop The Look:

(Outfit 1) Leggings from Delia’s, Crop Top from Collective Habit,  Sneakers from Converse, Bee Charming Jewelry Necklace from MetroPark USA, Sunglasses from Aerie
(Outfit 2) Crop Top from Forever 21, High-Waisted Leather Skirt from NastyGal, Double Fold-Over Clutch from Daily Look, Flats from Whistles UK
(Outfit 3) Rose Denim Shorts from Forever 21, Volcom Graphic Tee from Tilly’s, Boots from 6PM,  Spike, Cross, & Skull Bangle Set from Charlotte Russe, Kalo Spike Earrings from Swell

1. A classic sleeveless floral dress is a look that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Its high-waisted cinch makes this a flattering outfit for all spring beauties. Whether you’re headed to class or out to lunch, you can’t go wrong with this look unless you don’t go at all!

2. For more formal occasions, try a floral midi dress paired with a cardigan. A stunning outfit can boost your confidence and help make a great impression when it’s most important. Use that flower power, girl!

3. Lastly, we have the gorgeous floral maxi dress. The flattering high waist and flowing, lightweight fabric give you the best of ALL worlds – formal, casual, chic, sleek and comfortable. What else could you ask for? A pocket built specifically for hamburgers? Maybe that’s just me.

Shop The Look:

(Outfit 1) Dress from Modcloth, Shoes from TopShop, Towne & Reese Lillian Earrings from Pink Mascara
(Outfit 2) Flower Print Midi Dress from Quiz Clothing, Cardigan from John Lewis, Shoe Cult Cobalt Pumps from NastyGal, Daisy Necklace from Brandy Melville USA
(Outfit 3) Black VNeck Floral Maxi Dress from New Look, Cat-Eye Sunglasses from zeroUV, Sandals from American Eagle, Layla Bangle Set from Forever New

All in all, I think it’s safe to say floral is going to be huge this season. Did you find something you like? More to add to the list? Let us know! Tag your floral fashion online with #bnITlist2014.

Made in the USA: Whitney Howard Designs

If an outfit is a cake, accessories are the frosting: they might not be essential, but they sure make things a whole lot better. Our most recent Made in the USA obsession,Whitney Howard Designs, takes accessories we love – necklaces, rings, bracelets – and puts a little extra heart into them.

If you’re looking for a small gift that holds a big meaning, these accessories are for you. From “Inspire Rings” to “Keys to Your Heart“, these tiny trinkets pack a heartfelt punch. The entire collection is inspired by the designers’ desire to bring peace, love, gratitude and healing, to those who give and receive them.

One of our favorite pieces is the Quotable Cuff. Each has a tiny graphic and inspiring quote that will keep you motivated all day long. Stack them or wear each cuff one at a time! We love that these earth-friendly products are made from recycled pewter.

Made in the USA – Freakers

You’ve probably dressed up your pet before, so why not dress up your drink? Prevent that icky feeling you get from holding a condensation-soaked iced coffee with our latest obsession – Freakers. They’re like sweaters for your favorite frosty beverage and they’re part of our latest series, Made in the USA.

Few things are worse than that cold, drippy sensation that accompanies clutching a cold frappuccino or iced tea. Beyond that, those little cardboard sleeves sometimes just don’t cut it. With that in mind, Freaker USA has solved this problem with their array of fun and feisty beverage insulators. With names like “Baberaham Lincoln” and “The Dude”, they have somehow managed to take a mundane object and make it cool.

Which ones is your favorite? Post a comment or stop by select Barnes & Noble College campus bookstores and pick one up!

Made in the USA

No trend feels quite like home as much as the wave of Americana that’s been sweeping the nation. With a big nod to nostalgia, this trend celebrates all things that come from the land of the Red, White & Blue. We’re very excited to kick off our latest style series: Made in the USA. Each week we’ll be featuring a new product that’s – you guessed it – made right here in the United States. This week, we’re starting off with a set of tote bags that combine this trend with our other love – classic books.

Out of Print Clothing honors some of the greatest stories ever told through fashion and accessories. As their name suggests, they take iconic (and often Out of Print) book covers and feature them on their products. The result is a beautiful combination of literature and style. What’s even better – for each product sold, Out of Print donates a book to a community in need.

We’re thrilled to be carrying a few of their AMAZING tote bags in some of our stores. Whether you’re a devoted fan of Jane Austen or as intrigued by the mysterious Jay Gatsby as we are, you’ll be sure to fall in love with these bags.

The feathery Pride and Prejudice cover art comes from the original 19th century jacket designed by Hugh Thomson. However, if you’re anxiously awaiting The Great Gatsby film release this year, you can satisfy your Gatsby craving with the bag based off of the renowned 1925 first edition jacket by Francis Cugat. The Jane Eyre tote’s sweeping colors come from the Universal Library edition jacket.

These bags are available at select Barnes & Noble College bookstores so stop in today! Which bag will you be toting around? Post a comment!

DIY Dorm: T-Shirt Scarf

There are few things we love more than a good upcycling project. When our Guest Blogger sent us this fun DIY, we were eager to share it with our readers. Keep reading for easy-to-follow instructions that show you how to turn an old T-shirt into a brand new scarf!

What You’ll Need:

T-shirt
Scissors
Puff paint

What You’ll Do:

1. Start out decorating the ends of the t-shirt with puff paint

2. Once the paint has dried, cut the shirt across (cut below the arms but give yourself enough room to cut strips).

3. At the bottom of the shirt, cut approximately 1 inch strips all the way across (getting close to making fringes!).

4. Hold the shirt down and pull each strip towards you to create the fringe effect. Stretch out each strip to make them longer (don’t pull too hard or else they might rip off).

5. Once you’ve created the fringe, you can then either single or double wrap your new beautiful t-shirt scarf you just made: easy and inexpensive fashion!

Color Club Nail Polish (as its name suggests) focuses on one main thing: COLOR! For 30 years they have been a leader in professional nail color with their high-quality lacquers. Though the quality might be high, their prices are not. It’s never been so easy – and so affordable – to stay on trend.
