Better Breakfast Month – PB&B Wrap

This month we’re bringing you plenty of reasons to incorporate a healthy breakfast into your morning routine. Last week, we whipped up a yummy Fruit & Nut Yogurt to help you start the day off right and this week we’re back with another delicious breakfast idea. SparkRecipes combined two of our favorite foods (peanut butter and bananas) into one tasty on-the-go wrap. Yum!

What You’ll Need:

1 Banana

2 Tbsp Peanut Butter (I prefer crunchy)

1 whole wheat tortilla

What You’ll Do:

  1. Spread the peanut butter on the tortilla.
  2. Peel the banana and roll it into the wrap (peanut butter on the inside!).
  3. Cut the wrap into halves. Enjoy!

Because bananas are packed with Vitamin A, iron, and potassium, they are a fantastic source of natural energy. This super food is the perfect way to kick start your day!

Dish It: Cheerio-Banana Smoothie

This Betty Crocker smoothie is a twist on a classic breakfast meal. It might sound a bit different at first but is definitely worth a try. It’s healthy and only needs four ingredients…what’s not to love?

What You’ll Need:

  1. 1 cup of milk
  2. 1 cup of Cheerios cereal
  3. 1 ripe banana, cut into chucks
  4. 1 cup of ice
  5. Banana slices, if desired

What You’ll Do:

Step 1: In blender, place milk, cereal, banana chunks and ice. Cover and blend on high speed for about 30 seconds or until it reaches the consistency you prefer.

Step 2: Pour into 2 glasses. Top with banana slices and serve.

Would you try this cereal alternative?

The Undergrad’s Breakfast On-the-Go

Let’s face it, everyone gets sick of their breakfast meal plan at some point or another during college. At times, I can’t even look at the cafeteria any more for breakfast, so I end up picking up a breakfast sandwich instead. Most of the time, breakfast sandwiches are neither healthy nor particularly appetizing even though it’s important to start the day off with a healthy meal.

Consumer Reports researched breakfast sandwiches and out of the one hundred and six total choices, they found only seven healthy options.  I was really surprised to see McDonald’s and Burger King make the cut because fast food restaurants wouldn’t be the first thing to come to mind when I think of “healthy”. Burger King’s Egg & Cheese Muffin and McDonald’s Egg McMuffin were on were both rated rated “fair” on the list. Starbucks had two sandwiches, the Chicken Sausage Wrap and Turkey Bacon & White Cheddar Classic, both rated “good” while Dunkin Donuts had similar success with one wrap, their Egg White Turkey Sausage Wrap. Subway took the lead with two sandwich’s that rated well: the Egg White and Cheese Mornin’ Flatbread and Egg White and Cheese Muffin Melt each rated “very good” and “good”. I’ve never personally tried Subway’s morning sandwiches, but I’ll definitely make sure to stop by and pick one up.

So the next time you’re in a rush and need to make your breakfast a quick one, consider opting for one of these healthier choices. Have you ever tried any? Which was your favorite?

September is “Better Breakfast Month!”

Everyone has an excuse for why they skip breakfast. “I don’t have time,” “I’m just not hungry in the morning,” and “I’m trying to cut calories” are just a few. In reality, however, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. In honor of September being “Better Breakfast” month, I am going to give you a few reasons why:

  1. While you sleep, your body is essentially fasting (hence the name “break-fast”). Breakfast provides an energy boost to get your day started, even if it’s just a small meal, according to Amery Medical Center.
  2. Eating this extra meal actually helps control your weight. In addition to having an increased metabolism, BetterBreakfast.org states those who eat breakfast tend to consume fewer calories later on in the day, avoid overeating, and have more energy in general.
  3. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables eaten early in the day typically provide longer-lasting energy boosts than their sugary counterparts, adds Amery Medical Center. Who doesn’t want to feel alert all the way through mid-afternoon?
  4. Breakfast is easier than you think. BetterBreakfast.org recommends stocking up on healthy breakfast options ahead of time for much quicker preparation in the morning! Whole wheat toast, peanut butter, fruit, yogurt…the options are endless (and don’t be afraid to experiment)!
