The IT List: Tie Dye

What once was old is now new again! Remember being a kid at summer camp and being completely thrilled when it was time to tie-dye? Start feeling nostalgic, because tie-dye is on the rise again and it’s everywhere this summer. From clothes to nails, you can get this look with a little inspiration I’ve pulled from all over!

Bandeau Swimsuit from Target - $14.99 each piece

Because bathing suits generally come in bright patterns, the beach is the perfect place to try out the tie-dye trend. Hit the waves in this Bandeau Swimsuit by Xhilaration (available at Target, each piece only $14.99). The vibrant, eye-catching colors will be rivaled only by the sun.

Forever 21 Shorts ($17.80) and earrings on Etsy ($5.00)

Want to incorporate the look without feeling over-the-top? Forever 21 sells these subtle tie-dye denim cutoffs ($17.80) so, if you’re not ready to fully commit to the bright trend, these shorts will be perfect. They are very subtle, so feel free to complement them with small tie-dyed accessories. We found these tie-dyed Quartz Drop earrings on Etsy and, at only $5.00, they’re perfect!

If you’re ready to go all out with Tie-Dye, consider opting for a bright dress like this one below (also found on Etsy, $18.00). Offset the vivid pattern with subtle accessories and nude heels. You want the bright dress to be the main focus, so don’t overwhelm it with neon shoes or wild accessories.

Are you going to try Tie-Dye out for yourself or do you feel that it should stay in the 60’s? Post a comment and let us know your thoughts!

Dress for Success…for Less!

We’ve all heard the expression “dress for success” and when it comes to the workplace, that is exactly what you must do. Of course when you have the budget of a college student, this may seem like a difficult task to accomplish. Fear not! I am going to give you tips and tricks to build your work wardrobe on a budget and still look the part.

Staples – The biggest part of your outfits are the basic staple pieces (i.e. pants, skirts, shirts) These will be your black and neutral colors that allow you to mix and match between different outfits. These are important because you can acquire these pieces in almost any store you choose, so you don’t have to settle for expensive “work” pieces. Simple slacks and solid shirts are a base point that allow you to create multiple styles. Opt for black pants and pencil skirts, white shirts, and neutral/black cardigans.

Dresses- When in doubt, dress it out! Dresses are a great piece for work because you can dress them up or dress them down. Throw on a cardigan and some cute ballet flats and you are the definition of business casual (and you look super cute too!) You can find cute affordable dresses from stores like Target that will build both your work wardrobe and your everyday wardrobe! Of course, you must be sure that you dress is work appropriate: no low-cut, tight, short, revealing clothing.

Statement Pieces- It’s important to incorporate your own personal style when dressing for work (don’t lose your voice in the office!) A great way to do this in the appropriate way is to use statement pieces such a jewelry to add a little flare to your outfit. It’s best to stay away from large earrings and dangling bracelets that will create distraction and noise. Wearing bold colors and statement necklaces are a great way to grab attention without creating distraction or being disruptive. The great thing about this is that you can get these things for low prices from stores like Forever 21.

Shoes- Practical shoes are the cornerstone to a good outfit. Comfort and functionality are the most important things to look for when shoe shopping. No one wants to come home from work with big blisters on their feet! You can do anything from a simple flat to a wedge, just make sure that you keep it appropriate for the office (no sky-high heels, distracting straps, etc). Black pumps are always a great shoe for work, simple yet stylish and easy to mix and match!

Style on a Budget

We know it’s important for college students to live on a budget, so when our reader, Jenn, asked us where she could find websites to shop for stylish clothes that are not too expensive, we were inspired to share our bargain-hunting abilities with all of our readers! After all, who wants to brag about expensive labels when you can enjoy the fact that you saved tons of cash on all of your new outfits? Keep reading for our money-saving tips.

Tip #1: Be open-minded.
Just because a shop isn’t necessarily a fashion hot spot, doesn’t mean you should rule it out. I’ve found inexpensive hidden gems at stores like Walmart and Costco.  The key is to keep your eyes peeled for anything you might not have considered before!

Check out the Target Website for more designs by Jason Wu!

Tip #2: Collaborations can be amazing. I can’t help it, I’m obsessed with Jason Wu for Target! Why, you ask? It combines the delicate craftsmanship of his designer label with the more budget-friendly prices of Target. Tons of less expensive stores have been teaming up with big-name designers and the outcome has been a magical flurry of inexpensive fabulous-ness. Versace teamed up with H&M, Karl Lagerfeld went to work with Macy’s, and the list goes on and on.

MSNBC even discussed how two Italian designers were so inspired by the Franklin & Marshall sweat shirt they came across that they launched a high-end label featuring the school’s logo! However, you can save yourself a $100 by purchasing clothes featuring the logo from Barnes & Noble at a fraction of the cost. It’s all about doing your research.

Tip #3: Check discount websites.
Nowadays, there are tons of websites that offer designer clothing at discounted prices. Sites like Gilt and Shop It To Me offer designer brands at 40-70% off of what they normally cost. Other web pages, including 599 Fashion, sell clothing for well-below retail prices.

Tip #4: Think twice before buying.
The important thing to remember here is just because the clothes are less expensive than usual, doesn’t mean you should be buying every item you see. If you’re on the fence about making a purchase, wait a week or two and see if you still want it. If your enthusiasm has died down the next time around, refrain from buying the item. You’ll save time and money.

Forever21.com lets you stay within your budget...easily!

Tip #5: Sale Sale Sale! Whenever I get the urge to shop, I immediately check the SALE page on my favorite sites. Some stores, like Forever 21, DHstyles, and GoJane, regularly update their sale pages and offer excellent deals. Campus bookstores (like Barnes & Noble!) also offer sale items regularly, so don’t hesitate to check for promotions or items on clearance. If you really need a new sweatshirt, for instance, be sure to browse a few sale pages first – you’ll be surprised with what you can find.

Tip #6: Learn to make quick fixes. Have you ever ripped a hole in a pair of pants or shirt and felt like you had to go buy a new one? Now is the time to grab a needle and thread! Learning to make small repairs will extend the life of your clothes and will save you money you would have spent on replacements.

What’s better than watching both your closet and your wallet expand? Remember our tips next time you go shopping and don’t forget to share your own with us!
