But, what about a choice that is guided by your growling belly and not just your gut. It’s a choice many of us have to make in summer while grilling with friends– hot dog or hamburger (or veggie dog or veggie burger, of course)?
Most days I choose hot dogs. Actually, this past weekend alone I consumed 6 franks. Now that I think back on it, that’s disgusting. But, I’m not the only one who loves the mystery meat. It’s one of America’s most popular and most beloved food. Here are some fun facts you may not have known about the hot dog straight from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (yeah, I’m serious…there’s a hot dog council!):
In 2010, consumers spent more than $1.6 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets.
Americans will eat enough hot dogs at major league ballparks this year to stretch to and from Philadelphia, Pa. and St. Petersburg, Fla.
Los Angeles residents eat more hot dogs than any other city.
On July 4th, Americans eat 150 million hot dogs.
During Hot Dog Season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans eat 818 hot dogs per second!
So, what’s your choice? Do you typically reach for a hot dog or fire up the grill for a juicy burger?
