Can I Go Vegan On Campus?

This is a very common question.  It isn’t too difficult with some planning and creativity.  You don’t just have to eat salad and pasta for 4 years.  Here are some tips to help you eat vegan while away at school.

-Keep healthy snacks on you at all times such as a granola or energy bar, and some fruit such as an apple or banana.  There’s nothing worse than being starving between classes and trying to stay away from the candy machine.  Having a snack on you will ensure your avoidance of the bad snacks.

-Stock up on healthy (and a few tasty but not so healthy) vegan foods to keep in your dorm room such as vegan jerky, peanut butter, crackers, chips and salsa, popcorn, hummus, fruits, raw veggies for dipping, oatmeal, and if you can swing it, some microwave meals.

-Try to get a little microwave and mini fridge in your dorm room if possible.  At least you can cook in the microwave, and stock good food in your fridge.

-Go to Happycow.net to find vegan restaurants and natural food stores in your area.  Buy the harder to find vegan foods there.  Regular grocery stores will have the staples of beans, fruits, veggies and some meat alternatives.

-Befriend your cafeteria staff.  They have the food, so talk to them about what they can do to help feed you.  Request some staples (even better, try to get a few fellow vegans to go with you so they can see that there are more of you out there looking to eat this way).
