As an intern, I have learned a lot about what I should and should not wear in the office. Doing your job well is very important – and looking professional is too! Here are some tips on how you should dress in the office.
Avoid the Bling:
Make sure you keep your “jewelry” simple. Opt for a stylish, yet refined, watch and simple belt to compliment your outfits. A great place for watches and belts is Fossil.
Steer Clear of Crazy Patterns:
Stay away from any conspicuous patterns; this will make you appear more casual. Instead, look for shirts and ties with pinstripes and small checks to give yourself a more professional atmosphere. For trendy ties, we recommend a department store, like Macys. They have a huge selection so you’ll have plenty of options.
Color Coordination is Key:
When choosing a shirt and tie combination, make sure the fabrics complement each other. Keep your shirts classic and simple and let a little bit of your personality shine through with your choice of tie. Make sure to coordinate your colors and patterns so you aren’t clashing and avoid anything loud or distracting.
Dress Down/Causal Days:
You should always look professional, even if it’s a “dress down” day. Companies that offer these days usually allow jeans (YES!), but be sure your pants don’t contain holes or are worn. You should always look trendy with a clean, fitted pair of jeans (not baggy or too tight) but feel free to add your own flare by opting for shirts with patterned cuffs. One place particular that has great jeans and classic button-downs is the Gap.
