BNC Book Club: The Girl on the Train

the girl on the trainTitle: The Girl on the Train

Author: Paula Hawkins

Category: Keeps You on Your Toes

Overview: In her debut novel The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins weaves a web of intricate coincidences that leave the reader baffled. The story explores the life of a woman named Rachel who rides the same morning train every day and observes the people and street on which she once lived with her ex-husband. While a depressed Rachel thinks she is witnessing perfect lives from window of the train car, she comes to find that her life is not the only one that has some secrets. Hawkins switches narrators nearly every chapter to tell the fuller story and the change in consistently unreliable narrators and riveting plot line creates a psychological thriller that you just can’t put down.

Thoughts: I recently read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn so, when I started reading The Girl on the Train, my standard for a thriller novel was already set ridiculously high. Nevertheless, I flew through the pages of The Girl on the Train. The three different narrators had me identifying with, pitying and disliking almost every lead character… all at once. You know the author did her job well when you feel actual anger toward an unreliable fictional character. My mixed bag of emotions is what kept me so intrigued.

Aside from the characters, the plot line was undeniably captivating. The thing that really kept me on edge was the fact that there were so many loose ends and unknowns. I guarantee you will find yourself on Rachel’s journey with her, trying to figure out exactly what happened on that one night she can’t seem to remember. I do have to admit, I had very high expectations when I started this novel and although it didn’t necessarily exceed them, it definitely did not disappoint.
