Career Now Series: Crafting an Elevator Pitch

“Tell me about yourself.”

It’s the famous question. We’ve all been there… and if you haven’t yet, then you will be. It is the standard interview question for any job. The problem is that – because the question is so broad – it can be difficult to figure out where to start.

We all know the idea behind the “Elevator Pitch” – the idea that you only have the fleeting moments from the bottom floor to the top with somebody you admire in order to leave a lasting impression. The truth is, you will most likely never ride an elevator with your biggest role model or favorite celebrity. However, it’s likely you will meet someone very influential during your lifetime. After all, each new person you meet presents an opportunity to expand your network!

So, how do you begin putting your own Elevator Pitch together?

***Warning: The following questions will guide you in creating a memorable elevator pitch for yourself that might leave an inspiring first impression on those around you. Stop reading now if you do not want to be seen as powerful or inspiring.

Ready? Let’s go.

Here are 5 questions you need to ask yourself. Write your responses in a notebook or record yourself saying them aloud. The only rule? Answer authentically.

  1. Describe your mission?
  2. What are your passions?
  3. What are your career interests?
  4. What are your hobbies?
  5. What do you want to be remembered for? What is your legacy?

Once you finish asking these, circle and/or highlight the common themes you see. Make sure you cover what is most important to you and be sure to practice until it feels natural! It’s key that your “pitch” sounds like YOU, not like lines from a script.
