Connecting With Your Online Classmates

One of the essential parts of a college course is meeting friends and interacting with your peers… but what if your classes are online? This seemingly solitary experience actually isn’t so solitary after all. In fact, you should be connecting with your online classmates. Here’s the scoop.

Why should I connect with students I’ll never see?

Don’t be so sure you’ll never see them! Who knows, maybe you’ll make a new friend. Either way, it’s still important to connect.

You’ll have assistance on assignments.

It happens to everyone  – you’re about to start an assignment but there’s something you just don’t understand. It may take awhile for your professor to email you back, but your classmates are just a simple text message away.

You’ll obtain a study group.

Studying with classmates ensures that you didn’t miss out on some important material. Start a group chat, Skype, or create a Facebook group so you can put your minds together while studying!

You’ll gain more friends.

Sure classes are mainly about learning, but the experience just isn’t complete if you don’t make some friends along the way!

How do I connect with my classmates?

It’s a bit more challenging connecting with your classmates when you don’t meet face-to-face, but it’s totally possible!

Utilize the class introductions.

Online courses typically start out with the professor asking everyone to introduce themselves. They’ll often require you to respond to other classmates as well. Take advantage of this time and connect with students who have similar interests to yours.

Connect on social media.

We interact with our friends all the time on social media, so why not include our classmates? Ask your fellow classmates if they mind connecting on social media. This is also a great way to form study groups.

Participate on the discussion boards.

Online classes usually offer discussion boards where you can interact with classmates and ask any questions you have. Staying active on these boards is similar to interacting with your classmates in an actual classroom, so take advantage of it!
