For a lot of students, college is the first time you really live on your own…and it can be overwhelming! Feeling homesick is perfectly normal, but there are definitely some great methods for fighting it. Check out our tips below and share some of your own in the comments!
Make time to talk with loved ones from home.
Whether it’s your parents, a sibling, or your best friend, make time to chat with those who remind you of home. They’ll help you feel connected and are usually great at providing reassurance and comfort.
Meet new people.
A big part of being homesick is feeling out of place or uncomfortable in your new surroundings. Meeting new people and making new friends will help you feel tethered to your new home! The first few weeks at school are the perfect time to do this, since a lot of other people are going through the same thing.
Get involved.
Getting involved won’t just help you meet new people (like we mentioned above), it will help keep you busy! The combination of these two factors will help you feel less homesick. You might even find a new hobby!
Plan a trip home.
This might sound counter-intuitive, but knowing that you have a trip home coming up can help you feel more relaxed. Knowing that your time away isn’t indefinite will encourage you to make the most of it while it’s there.
Explore campus.
What’s the best way to feel more comfortable on campus? Get more familiar with it! Take time to wander around and explore your new surroundings.
