6 Reasons You Should Visit Office Hours

Does the thought of meeting with your professor one-on-one frighten you more than raising your hand in a lecture of 200 students? Relax – it’s totally not something to stress about! Your professors are actually one of your greatest resources in college, which is why we decided to list six reasons you should visit their office hours.

1. Get clarification on grades and written feedback.

A grade only tells you so much. And those hand written notes your professor leaves on the side of your essay? They’re not always very legible! Visit your professor and get clarification on any grades or feedback you’re confused about. They’ll help you understand where these point deductions and suggestions came from.

2. If you’re unhappy with your grades, learn how you can improve.

Hey, we all make mistakes! If you’re not doing too hot in your class, pay a visit to your professor. Only your professor knows the best ways to boost your grade!

3. Gather any tips for upcoming assignments.

Do you ever get those HUGE projects that take the entire semester and require some big, fancy presentation at the end? Yeah… that’s not something you should just wing! Prepare yourself by chatting with your professor about any helpful tips they may have.

4. Clarify any lessons from the course.

Sometimes, you simply just don’t understand the lesson. Don’t sweat it! Your professor will be happy to teach it to you one-on-one if you set aside some time during their office hours.

5. Catch up on any work you missed.

Were you out all last week with the flu? Did you have a big family wedding across the country you had to travel to? If you were unable to attend a class, office hours are the best time to pick your professor’s brain about any work you need to make up.

6. Get career and academic advice.

Your academic adviser is typically the go-to person in this situation, but every professor is a professional in their field – so don’t limit yourself! If you need any advice about your current path, the professors in your major will likely have some great insights that they would be willing to share. Plus, you may even be able to use them as a reference in the future!
