6 Things to Consider When Choosing a College

The thought of college sparks images of big game days, endless school spirit, and memories that will last a lifetime – but before you get there, you have to decide where you want to attend! Picking out a college is no easy task, so we pulled some important factors you should definitely consider before making your big decision.

1. Cost.

This one is a biggie! Student loans aren’t exactly the most fun thing to deal with, so make sure to keep tuition in mind when you’re selecting a school. Keep in mind other cost-related factors as well – such as scholarship earnings or the price of your meal plan and room and board.

2. Location.

Location plays a BIG factor in what your college experience will be like. Are you looking for a brand new experience out of state? Or do you prefer to stay within easy reach of your home? You’ll also have to consider different types of environments – such as a busy school within a bustling city or a quaint college in a more suburban area. Remember, this will be your new home away from home for the next four or so years!

3. Major.

Even if a school appears to be your dream college at first glance, it’s not going to do you any good if they don’t offer your major! If you’re torn between two schools that both offer your major, take a look at which school has a stronger program in that area.

4. Size.

Some students absolutely love the idea of a huge university with heaps of school spirit during game days and a social scene that never dies. Others cringe at the thought of having massive class sizes and prefer a more tight-knit campus community and a personalized learning experience. Both have their pros and cons – you just have to figure out what’s best for you!

5. Housing.

Housing is important if you don’t plan on commuting to school. Make sure to check out the res life during your campus visits. After all, you’ll be living there for quite some time!

6. Student Life.

At the end of the day, the school you choose is more than just a classroom – it’s a lifestyle! Going on a college tour is a great way to understand student life on campus. Pay attention to the types of clubs and activities that are offered, where students generally hang out and have fun, and the types of events that take place – such as big homecoming weekends or cool charity dance-a-thons. It also helps to take a look at each potential school’s social media pages!
