How to Find the Right College Major

Does the thought of choosing a college major stress you out beyond belief? We don’t blame you. It feels like you’re supposed to suddenly know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life! The good news? Finding the right major is a process, and there’s nothing wrong with taking time to explore the right fit. Here’s what we recommend.

Take a variety of classes.

You don’t need a major right when you start college. You can actually go in undecided, knock a few Gen Ed classes out of the way while you learn about yourself, and then declare your major once you’re ready. If you do go this route, make sure you spend your time wisely by taking on classes and electives in different areas that excite you. Choosing a major is much easier when you know which types of courses you enjoyed best!

Explore your interests.

You may not know what you’re truly passionate about just yet, but you totally know what makes you happy on a day-to-day basis! For example: someone who’s a big movie-goer might explore majors that can lead to jobs within the film industry, while a bookworm might look into majors revolved around the publishing industry. Do some research around your hobbies and interests and see what career fields stand out to you!

Think of the subjects you loved.

The subjects you enjoyed in high school say a lot! Someone who thrived in their English and Literature classes probably won’t end up in a math-based major, and vice versa. Thinking of your strong points in high school is a great way to start narrowing down your search.

Connect with people in different industries.

Sometimes you just have to work backwards — meaning, take a look at some people who are already well established in their careers and decide if what they’re doing excites you. This can be relatives, family friends, or even people you scope out on LinkedIn! If their job title seems right up your alley, it doesn’t hurt having a chat and seeing what they do on a day-to-day basis, and what kinds of majors can lead to that path.
