5 Tips for Sticking to a New Healthy Habit

Get in shape, begin a new diet, start drinking more water….It’s that point in the year where these kinds of healthy habits are at the front of mind! The problem? Changes like this have a funny way of lasting only about a week or so, and then before you know it, you’re back right where you started. So how do you make these healthy habits stick? That’s where these tips come in.

Don’t get discouraged by failures.

The biggest mistake people make when forming a new habit is completely giving up as soon as they fall off track. You can’t expect your journey to be mistake-free! There might be a day (or two, or three…) where you end up breaking your habit. Recognize that this is part of the process, and then start fresh once again.

 

Start with small changes. 

With your end goal in mind, it’s easy going full-throttle when you jump into your new healthy habits. Major changes are harder adjusting to though, making it more tempting for you to revert back to your old ways. Let’s say your goal is to have a beach-ready body by summertime. Instead of starting an intense workout regimen 6 days a week, start with a lighter, more manageable routine and gradually work your way up!

 

 

Stop comparing yourself.

Your only competition is yourself. Let us repeat — Your only competition is yourself. While using others as your inspiration can be positive, be careful that you don’t start comparing your results to theirs. You don’t want to end up feeling discouraged and completely give up on your goal, right?

 

Adjust your environment.

Can you imagine trying to start a new, healthy diet when your pantry is still filled with tempting sweets and salty snacks? Yeah, we wouldn’t last very long either. But not only should you rid your environment of those enticing little “cheats,” you should also work on adding in positive encouragement. For example, if your goal is to cut down on screen time, how about bringing more books or other non-digital activities to your space?

 

Track your progress.

Tracking your progress not only keeps your new habit at the front of mind, but it also serves as encouragement! It’s basically like a pat on a back that let’s you know to keep up the good work. Try downloading an app like Wonderful Day, which makes tracking your progress super easy and convenient.
