5 TED Talks for Discovering Your Best Self

It’s that time of year where we’re all creating goals and resolutions in order to become the best versions of ourselves. With that in mind, we decided to dive deep into one of the most motivational things we could think of. That’s right — TED Talks. Check out some of our favorites below.

1. Why you will fail to have a great career – Larry Smith

Are you currently working on building a career, discovering your path, or something along those lines? In this comical, non-sugar-coated speech on pursuing your passions, Larry Smith dives into the utterly ridiculous excuses we all create when we fail at reaching our dreams.

2. Are You Human? – Ze Frank

In this short — yet impactful — video, Ze Frank relays a series of simple questions that determine “Are you human?” Through each question, you’ll realize that we all face the same fears, seemingly-crippling thoughts, and quirks. Cut yourself a break and don’t be so hard on yourself — You’re only human, and so is everyone else.

3. Before I die I want to… – Candy Chang

Candy Chang turned an abandoned building into a chalkboard filled one thought provoking question — “Before I die I want to…?” The answers the community responded with range from witty and lighthearted to deep and personal, but each one conveys a message of solidarity and allows you to reflect on the things that really matter.

4. There’s more to life than being happy – Emily Asfahani Smith

Using her own experiences backed with scientific data and research, Emily Asfahanti Smith explains the negative effects of chasing happiness, and why creating a meaningful life is the more fulfilling route. She then shares her four pillars of creating meaning so that you can start putting these ideas into action.

5. Why you should define your fears instead of your goals – Tim Ferriss

Rather than your usual goal-setting, Tim Ferriss walks listeners through a powerful exercise called “fear-setting.” Ferriss details how facing and acknowledging your crippling fears can teach you to thrive in high-stress environments, make better decisions, and train yourself to separate what can control from what you cannot.
