It’s the season of giving, and while we’re all frantically searching for the perfect holiday gifts for friends and family, let’s not forget about all the other ways we can give this season. Check out these five feel-good ways you can make a difference during the holidays this year.
1. Donate your frequent flyer miles.
Last year, a friendly frequent flyer made waves on the viral internet when he offered to help a bunch of strangers fly home for the holidays. Haven’t heard of him? You can read the full post here. While you may not have racked up as many miles as he has (he flew a whopping 350,000 miles in one year!), any amount of miles helps.
Check with your dedicated airline and see how you can make donations. Oh, and if you don’t know of anyone that could use the miles, you can always donate them to a charity!
2. Share the season with those spending it alone.
Giving back isn’t always about monetary donations — Sometimes kind gestures make just as much of an impact! How about extending your holiday invitation to that neighbor who doesn’t have family? Or, how about writing holiday cards for troops deployed overseas?
3. Look out for holiday events that support a cause.
Whether it’s a holiday-themed 5K, breakfast with Santa, or a festive holiday light show in your town, a lot of community events have a special cause behind them this time of year. Of course it’s something fun to do over the weekend, but the real win is that the proceeds are helping those in need.
4. Do your holiday shopping at stores that give back.
Some retailers make it their mission to give back with each purchase made on their site. That’s right — You can rest easy knowing you’ve made a difference, just for doing your holiday shopping! We listed out some of these do-good stores here.
5. Donate food and toys.
Food and toy drives pop up everywhere during the holidays — And for a good reason. Can you imagine if you couldn’t afford a warm holiday meal or gifts for your loved ones? If you don’t know of any holiday drives in your area, you can look up your local food bank here, and learn more about donating toys here.
