5 Reasons You Need to Stop Doubting Yourself

You are your toughest critic. You’re probably the first to notice every mistake you make, the last to give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back, and the only one still harping on that last time your actions didn’t go as planned. Let’s cut to the chase — This lack of confidence you’re building up is doing you a serious disservice. Take a look at these five reasons why you need to stop doubting yourself.

1. Your career depends on it. 

Having confidence in the workplace isn’t easy for interns or recent grads. You’re new to the career world, after all. But in order to go from the newbie to the seasoned vet, you can’t doubt yourself. How can you grow as a professional if you’re too afraid to share ideas, ask questions and take risks? The best way to ditch doubt and give yourself a kick in the right direction is by pretending that someone else is ready to snatch each opportunity you’re given, because–well–they probably are. 

 

 

2. Your relationships will improve.

We don’t just bring doubt into our careers — We often bring it into our relationships, too. How can this put a damper on things? Well, imagine an argument with your best friend going on and on and on because no one has enough confidence to admit their faults. Or, imagine falling victim to jealousy because you’re insecure about your boyfriend or girlfriend hanging out with other people. And finally, imagine having your friends lash out on you because you haven’t been around lately, but you never told them you were going through a rough patch because you feared what they would think. Self-confidence goes a long way!

 

3. It’s necessary for your health and well-being.

For obvious reasons, self-doubt causes a lot of stress and negative emotions. Clearly this can affect your overall happiness! But aside from that, stress weakens your immune system and can lead to plenty of more health issues down the line.

 

4. You’ll learn more about yourself.

Has doubt ever held you back from new experiences or opportunities? If so, you’re probably missing out on learning a thing or two about yourself, too. When you adopt a more confident mindset, you’re basically giving yourself permission to take new chances. You might have a few ups and downs along the way, but you’re confident enough to know that the “downs” are some of the most valuable learning experiences.

 

5. New (and exciting!) experiences will follow.

Whether you finally give a go at that big work presentation you always shied away from, set off on a study abroad adventure when you’ve never traveled alone, or even just get that short haircut you never thought you’d be brave enough to try, it’s safe to say that a ton of exciting experiences come along with some confidence.
