5 Tips for Calming Nerves on The First Day of Your Internship

Whether it’s your very first time interning or not, starting a brand new role can be a total nerve-wracking experience. After all, you totally want to knock the socks off your new colleagues and prove you’re cut out for the job! We’re sure you’ll do just great, but in the meantime, here’s how you can calm those first-day nerves.

1. Make sure your supplies are in check.

Knowing that you have everything you need for a successful day is one way to put your mind at ease. Rather than scrambling for everything at the last minute, prepare ahead of time. Make sure you have your outfit picked out, you know where your car keys are, and your bag is packed with all your essentials.



2. Put things into perspective. 

Guess what? Internships are learning opportunities. That means your new manager doesn’t expect you to come in as an expert, so don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself! On your very first day, you’re only expected to show up with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. That’s not so hard, is it?


3. Ask questions.

It’s totally okay to have a ton of questions on your first day. In fact, it’s highly encouraged! Definitely make sure to ask whatever is on your mind (just as long as it’s work-related, of course!). The more you know, the more comfortable you’ll feel.


4. Make use of organizational tools. 

It’s safe to say you’re going to learn a lot on your first day (and your entire internship for that matter). While this might seem nerve-wracking, it’s nothing a little bit of organization can’t help. Making sure you have a planner (or another organizational tool of choice) will give you some peace of mind that you won’t fall off track.


5. Smile! 

It’s so simple, but it makes a big difference! Remember how we said you’re only expected to come in with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn? Cracking a smile shows just that. So spread some happiness around your new workplace (it is contagious after all), and see how fast your nerves diminish!
