Get involved.

On-campus jobs, Greek life, sports, clubs…there are so many ways you can get involved on campus! The great thing about meeting people this way is that you’re sure to find someone with similar interests as you. After all, they chose to get involved in the same way that you did, right?

Keep your door open.

Propping open your dorm room door is basically the universal sign for, “Come in and be friends!” You’ll likely see a lot of students doing this during the first few weeks of the new semester. Everyone is looking to socialize, so don’t be nervous to pop your head in and introduce yourself!

Reach out on social media.

Many incoming students worry about making new friends on campus, so they’ll likely welcome any friendly interaction ahead of time. Reaching out to some future students on Facebook or other social media platforms is a great way to start forming bonds before you even set foot on campus.

Attend campus events.

School-hosted events are filled with new students eager to explore campus and meet new people. It’s also a great environment to spark some conversation—free refreshments and entertainment brings out the good mood in everyone!

Get to know classmates.

We once made the case for classroom friendships – and we still stand by that today! (Check out 5 Reasons Why “Class Friends” are the Best Friends).

The classroom is the perfect place to start new friendships. Between group projects and forming study groups to exchanging missed notes and borrowing pencils, striking up some small-talk with your fellow classmates is simple. Plus, there’s a good chance you’ll see the same faces in future classes—might as well become friends!
