6 Ways to Start the Term Productively

Nothing beats that feeling of motivation you get when the term just begins. It’s a brand new start, you’ve got new goals, and you have an entire semester to accomplish them. But in order to keep that momentum going, you need to start off on the right foot. Check out how we recommend starting the term productively!

1. Start filling out your planner.

Syllabus week has a reputation of being a lax time where you can show up to class (or…not) and just chill out without caring. We suggest taking this week a little bit more seriously, though. After grabbing your syllabus, start adding any big projects and exam dates into your planner. Oh, and make sure to write down each professor’s office hours while you’re at it!

2. Attend an organization fair.

Getting involved is a huge part of gaining that unforgettable college experience everyone dreams about. Act fast and make sure you don’t miss your school’s organization fair! They’re typically at the very start of the semester, and they allow you to chat with members from each club so you can figure out where you’re comfortable. We suggest looking up the organizations your school offers beforehand so you know which ones you’ll want to check out at the fair.

3. Grab the rest of your supplies.

Some of us are the type that have colored-coded folders, a variety of pens and highlighters, and notebooks for days. The rest of us? Sometimes we like to feel out the semester a bit and find out what we actually need before making these purchases…No biggie! Just make sure you’re not scrounging for that textbook you never bought the day before an exam. And, you’ll probably need more than one notebook for the five or so courses you’re taking.

4. Block out time for schoolwork.

You’re already following a class schedule each day, so why not pencil in time each week for schoolwork and studying? When you actually block out this time in your schedule, you’re more likely to commit to it and stay in a routine. Check your course schedule for any large gaps between classes. This is the perfect time for a study session at the campus library.

5. Chat with some classmates.

Imagine it’s the night before a big exam. You didn’t get around to studying as soon as you wanted to, but now is a better time than never. You sit down at your desk, pull out your study guide, and realize there are some things you just don’t understand. Aside from building some lasting friendships, this is why you should get friendly with your classmates. Getting clarity on your school work is just a quick text message away!

6. Organize your workspace.

Do you ever feel like you’ll find any excuse to put off your studying and schoolwork just a little bit longer? A cluttered desk is a much too easy excuse, and having to dig around to find all of your study materials is a chore in itself. The fix? Transform your desk into a productive workspace. This means keeping clutter at bay with desk organizers and adding a touch of fun personality with a little bit of decor. Trust us — this makes a big difference!
