This time of year, we’re all itching for that hair-raising jolt of adrenaline that comes along with all things spooky. That’s why we rounded up some ghostly tales of paranormal activity across different college campuses. After all, college campuses are really old!
Keep reading to see what we dug up, but be warned — they may send shivers down your spine!
1. Wells College
Rumor has it, a fire erupted in an old building on campus many years ago. In an attempt to save the students, a security guard named Max was forced to push some of them down a flight of stairs. The students made it out, but Max, unfortunately, did not. Some students still say they can feel the ghost of Max pushing them as they walk down the stairs where that building once stood!
2. Moravian College
As the 6th oldest college in America and the former site of a revolutionary war hospital, it’s no wonder this one is haunted! In one of the halls, students often claim to hear tapping within a locked cabinet. Two students decided to conduct their own investigation. They set a flashlight on the floor and stated, “If you’re here, turn on the flashlight.” Nothing happened, so they proceeded to unlock the cabinet and tried again. “If you don’t turn the light on, we’ll lock the cabinet again.” they threatened. The light immediately turned on. They then insisted that if this ghost turns the light back off, they’ll leave the cabinet unlocked when they leave. The light instantly turned back off.
3. College of Charleston
One of the current residence halls was built on the site of an old orphanage house that no longer stands. In the early 1900’s, a couple of children playing outside started a fire on the building grounds, causing everyone to evacuate. Unfortunately, four orphans died from smoke inhalation. Now, students in the resident hall often deal with false fire alarms. On top of that, students have reported hearing children laughing, marbles rolling across the floor, and children singing “Ring Around the Rosie.”
4. Dartmouth College
Back in the 1930’s, Dartmouth’s Theta Chi fraternity suffered the tragic loss of nine brothers after a carbon monoxide gas leak. Ever since, there has been a slew of paranormal activity at the site of the old house, such as objects moving on their own, strange apparitions in the windows, and refrigerator contents scattering to places they shouldn’t be. There was even a strange occurrence during one of the fraternity’s rituals a few decades later, when a brother witnessed a group of men in old-fashioned suits cheering on the new members. The group of men disappeared not long after he saw them.
5. University of Northern Iowa
There are actually two ghosts that are well-known on this campus: Zelda and Augie. Zelda earned the reputation of a benevolent ghost, as it’s said that she once guided a falling electric cable toward the only open seat in the theater during a sold-out performance. Augie haunts one of the campus’s residence halls, and his stories are a bit spookier! Many students have actually witnessed seeing his ghostly apparition. One student, in particular, woke up in the night to find that her TV screen was blue and she could hear footsteps in her room. Her TV screen then started flickering with the word “Goodnight” as she felt someone at the end of her bed pulling the sheets off of her.
6. Muskingum University
Muskingum has quite a few paranormal hot spots. One of which is a dorm hall where a sorority member is said to have taken her own life. Students often report seeing her silhouette through the window of the third floor, or hearing her high-heeled footsteps down the halls. There are also quite a few reports of doors locking and unlocking on their own. One student claimed that she locked her door, only to come back to her dorm and find that her blinds were tainted with a mysterious blood stain that never came out.
7. Binghamton University
Ghosts are said to lurk all around Binghamton. The student radio station, for example, is said to be haunted by a ghost named Moe Loogham. If a DJ can’t find an album, Moe is said to lend a helping hand by pushing it off the shelves. A few of the residence halls have regular activity as well, with experiences including textbooks opening on their own, slamming furniture, and ghostly apparitions. An apparition of a student is even said to have sent a janitor falling from a ladder as the ghost passed right through her!
8. Penn State University
One of the most haunted spots on Penn State’s campus is Schwab Auditorium, where the campus’s own paranormal team believes a janitor and a female spirit still lurk. They also believe the spirit of industrialist Charles Schwab still resides there, since he loved supporting the theater so much while he was still alive. Reports in this theater include strange noises, the sound of footsteps, feelings of being scratched, and objects moving across the floor.
