5 Ways to Overcome Writer’s Block

You just sat down to write a huge essay. The due date is approaching, so you know you’ve got to dive into this paper now. You formulate the header: name, date, class, etc…and then that’s where it stops. As prepared as you are, your mind just isn’t spitting out the sentences you need. The next time you’re plagued with this writer’s block, keep these five tricks in mind!

1. Create an outline.

Sometimes the hardest part about writing a paper is just figuring out how to tackle everything you need to cover. You might be thinking, “Pshh…who has time to write an outline?” But imagine how much faster you’ll get through your essay once all the information is already organized and flowed out! It’s totally worth the effort.

2. Go for a walk.

The more you sit in front of your screen stressed out about your writer’s block, the more frustrated you’re going to get. Try stepping away for a bit and taking a brisk walk. It’ll ease that stress so when you sit back down to write, you can start with a fresh mindset.

3. Jump to a different section.

So, you’ve been stuck on the same paragraph for the past 30 minutes and you just can’t figure out how to attack it. If you keep trying to buckle down on this one paragraph, you may even end up spending another 30 minutes there! Try jumping to a different section of your paper and then revisit that paragraph later on. You’ll likely get a better idea of what you want to say once more of your essay is laid out.

4. Listen to music.

You’ll definitely want to drown out any distractions around you while writing. Even somebody clicking their pen too much can take your mind away from your work. Putting on some headphones with soft music (preferably something without lyrics) will do the trick. It may even inspire you to think more creatively!

5. Change your environment.

Think about where you chose to sit down and write. Are you laying in bed in your dorm room? Are you at a desk, but you’ve got the TV playing in the background and friends chatting next to you? Your environment matters a lot! Scope out a quiet, distraction-free zone—like the library.
